Oktay reiterates support for TRNC’s recognition and equal status

Fuat Oktay, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, recently hosted members of the UK Parliament Turkey and TRNC Groups, House of Lords member Meral Ece, and other visiting members of parliament from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

In a statement posted on his social media account, Oktay discussed the meeting and highlighted the topics that were addressed. “As the Turkish Grand National Assembly Foreign Affairs Commission, we met with the UK Parliament Turkey and TRNC Groups, House of Lords member Meral Ece and members of the Parliament who visited the TRNC,” Oktay said.

He also mentioned that during the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations with England, as well as international issues, particularly focusing on Cyprus and Israel’s attacks on Gaza. Oktay emphasized the significance of international community pressure to implement the injunction decision announced by the International Court of Justice in the genocide case against Israel.

The meeting also touched upon the importance of supporting the TRNC’s approach towards the recognition of the inherent rights of the Turkish Cypriots, their sovereign equality, and equal international status. Oktay stated, “We exchanged views on what could be done to break the isolation of the TRNC.”

The meeting signifies ongoing diplomatic efforts between Turkey and the UK to address and seek solutions to various international issues, including the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus disputes. This kind of dialogue and collaboration between the two countries is essential in promoting peace and stability in the region.
