Olzhas Bektenov Appointed as Kazakhstan’s New Prime Minister
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has appointed Olzhas Bektenov as the new Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, according to a decree signed on Feb. 6. Bektenov will take over from Alikhan Smailov, who resigned from the position.
Bektenov’s appointment was supported by the majority of deputies during the plenary meeting of the Mazhilis, the lower chamber of the Kazakh Parliament. He was nominated by the Amanat party, and the remaining ministers are expected to be appointed soon.
President Tokayev held consultations on Bektenov’s candidacy with the leaders of party factions in accordance with Article 44 of the Constitution. The discussions included leaders of the Amanat Party, the People’s Party of Kazakhstan, the Aq Jol Democratic Party, the National Social Democratic Party, the Auyl party, and the Respublica party.
In his address, Tokayev emphasized the need for the government to make prompt and effective decisions, especially in the current economic climate. He acknowledged Smailov’s role in ensuring stability but emphasized the importance of adapting to new realities and confronting new challenges.
The new Prime Minister, Bektenov, outlined his priority tasks, which include giving a new economic impetus and focusing on the development of the country’s industry and oil sectors. He also emphasized the importance of stimulating domestic production, supporting domestic businesses, and effectively utilizing the potential of agriculture, water resources, and energy saving measures.
Bektenov also expressed his commitment to expanding the use of artificial intelligence and new technologies, as well as ensuring the rule of law for the benefit of the country.
Prior to Bektenov’s appointment, President Tokayev had signed a decree on Feb. 5 for the dismissal of the government, with Smailov having held the post of Prime Minister since January 2022. The appointment of Bektenov reflects a new direction for the Kazakh government as it seeks to address the challenges and opportunities facing the country.
