Commemoration Program Held in Burdur to Honor Martyrs and Veterans of Failed Coup Attempt
On the 7th anniversary of the failed coup attempt organized by the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) on July 15, 2016, a commemoration program was conducted in Burdur to honor the martyrs and veterans. The event took place in Cumhuriyet Square after a cortege march on Gazi Street.
The program commenced with a moment of silence and the singing of the National Anthem, followed by the recitation of the Holy Quran. It was a solemn and significant occasion to remember and pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the country.
Elif Serin, the sister of 15 July martyr Ömer Halisdemir, who worked as a health personnel in Burdur, delivered a heartfelt speech during the event. She expressed that the past 7 years felt like an eternity for their family. Ömer Halisdemir, born in 1974, was a dedicated and hardworking individual who played a vital role in their family dynamics. Serin shared anecdotes of their childhood and highlighted the immense void left by her brother’s sacrifice. She expressed pride in his actions but also the longing and longing his absence brings.
Burdur Governor Ali Arslantaş also spoke during the program and prayed that the nation would never experience betrayals like the events of July 15 again. He paid tribute to the 251 martyrs who lost their lives in the failed coup attempt and expressed hope that they would find eternal rest in heaven.
The commemoration activities included a Starboard Delivery Ceremony, poetry and oratorio performances, a mehteran performance, and a hymn recital by students who won the Turkey Century Running Competition. The program provided a platform to honor and remember the courage and sacrifice of those involved.
The event concluded with a meal, allowing participants to come together and reflect on the significance of the day.
As the years pass, these commemoration programs serve as a reminder of the bravery and resilience of individuals who stood against the treacherous coup attempt. July 15 remains a significant date etched in the collective memory of the Turkish people, symbolizing their unwavering commitment to democracy and unity.
