Onion Prices Drop to 4 Liras in the Market – Latest Economic Update

Onion prices in Turkey have plummeted from 17-18 TL to just 4-5 TL due to the closure of exports, reduced demand, and surplus supply. Adana Agriculture Platform Spokesperson Cahit İncefikir explained that this has caused significant problems for onion producers, with many unable to sell their products and some having to plow their fields with uncollected onions. İncefikir emphasized the importance of agricultural planning to prevent these kinds of issues from occurring in the future. He suggests that plans should be developed to determine appropriate planting areas, consumption levels, sales, and exports. Currently, onions are being sold for 6-7 TL from the field, 7-8 TL in markets and greengrocers, and up to 15-16 TL in larger markets with additional costs included. Though the decrease in prices has made onions more affordable for consumers, it is important to ensure that these fluctuations do not negatively impact producers and their livelihoods.
