Opposition Leader Criticizes Hungarian Government Over Rising Food Prices
Páter Magyar, the leader of the opposition Tisza Party, has called out the Hungarian government for what he claims are lies about stopping inflation. According to Magyar, recent figures show that inflation is actually on the rise once again.
In a statement, Hungarian said that over the past four years, food prices in Hungary have been skyrocketing at an alarming rate. He pointed out that basic food items have seen the highest increase, with prices soaring since January 1st of this year. Magyar also highlighted that food price inflation in Hungary is two and a half times higher than the European Union average, with food prices in the country now surpassing that of the EU average.
Magyar went on to criticize Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who is currently on vacation in India, for not addressing the economic policies that have led to this increase in food prices. He mentioned that due to measures such as high VAT rates, special retail taxes, and various other taxes, the price of white bread has risen by 163 percent, milk by 124 percent, and eggs by 112 percent over the past four years. Magyar emphasized that the average family of four now spends HUF 92,000 (EUR 224) more on food compared to four years ago.
The opposition leader’s statements have reignited discussions about the government’s economic policies and their impact on the cost of living for Hungarian citizens. The rising food prices have raised concerns among the population, with many calling for action to address the issue.
