Millions of Ukrainian Guest Workers in Hungary? A Call for Vigilance
At the opening of the Star of the Trade Festival on Monday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán addressed the nation’s youth with a strong message about the future of work in Hungary. He emphasized that "if there is work, there is everything," highlighting the necessity of meaningful employment for the younger generation. Orbán’s remarks come amid discussions about Ukraine’s potential entry into the European Union, which he warned could significantly impact job opportunities for Hungarian youth over the next two decades.
Orbán underscored the aspirations of young people, stating, “They don’t want to lead phony lives… they want valuable skills and success in meeting serious challenges.” According to him, young Hungarians are eager for a future where they can thrive on their abilities rather than relying on state support or parental aid.
Reflecting on Hungary’s transformation since 2010, Orbán recalled a time when the country was "mostly bankrupt," with many citizens relying on benefits or illegal work to survive. He expressed pride in the progress made since then, citing the creation of one million more jobs compared to a decade ago. "People don’t need to be on the lookout for a state job to make a living," he said, commending current students for their potential and fortitude.
The Prime Minister praised the evolution of vocational training in Hungary, emphasizing a shift toward professions that offer lucrative salaries. He mentioned that skilled trades such as carpentry and electrical work now provide substantial financial rewards, encouraging young people to consider these paths.
However, Orbán also issued a warning regarding the impending challenges that Hungary may face. He cited the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, economic pressures, and global shifts as potential threats. “We have our own scenario for Hungary’s future, but the worst scenarios are also on the table,” he cautioned, stressing unity and resilience as essential for the nation.
As Hungary navigates these complexities, Orbán highlighted the significance of the government’s referendum on Ukraine’s EU accession, asserting that the decision could shape the nation’s trajectory for years to come. He urged young Hungarians to engage actively in the democratic process, expressing concern over the potential influx of Ukrainian laborers, which he argued could jeopardize local jobs and wages.
In concluding his address, Orbán called on the youth to remain vigilant and proactive about their future, reminding them that the power to influence their country’s direction rests in their hands. “Don’t let anybody make decisions above your head,” he implored, signaling the importance of individual agency in shaping a hopeful and prosperous Hungary.
