Orbán cabinet emphasizes importance of stability in Romania for ethnic Hungarians
Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, expressed the country’s interest in Romania having a stable government, the constant development of bilateral ties, and the improvement of the situation of ethnic Hungarians in Transylvania. Szijjártó highlighted the importance of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) having a strong showing in the Romanian general election, as it provides a solid foundation for the party to be part of the government coalition in Bucharest once again.
Szijjártó emphasized the positive outcomes of working with a Romanian government that includes RMDSZ, stating that it facilitates results that are beneficial for both countries and nations. Hungary is prepared to collaborate with RMDSZ and the new Romanian government coalition, wishing them success in their endeavors.
Additionally, Szijjártó praised Barna Tánczos and Attila Cseke, who will serve as ministers in the new government, expressing confidence in their capabilities based on their previous performances.
Meanwhile, Marcel Ciolacu, President of the PSD, was nominated as Prime Minister by Klaus Iohannis, with the aim of the pro-European coalition regaining the trust of citizens.
In response to the political agreement signed by parties including the PSD, PNL, RMDSZ, and a faction of national minorities, RMDSZ President Hunor Kelemen stressed the importance of rebuilding trust with citizens in order to address the deep political crisis. Kelemen highlighted the need for a balanced 2025 budget and the prompt organization of presidential elections to implement necessary reforms for the benefit of all communities.
The dynamic between Hungary and Romania, as well as the developments in the Romanian political landscape, will continue to be of interest as both countries navigate their bilateral relationship and address the concerns of ethnic Hungarian populations in Transylvania.
