Orbán cabinet pushes for Russia’s inclusion in Europe’s security framework
Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, emphasized the importance of East-West cooperation for Hungary’s security during a press conference with OSCE Secretary General Feridun Sinirlioglu. Szijjártó stated that Hungary supports the operations of the OSCE and believes in strengthening the organization to ensure peace and stability.
Citing Hungary’s historical experience, Szijjártó highlighted the benefits of civilised cooperation between East and West, noting the negative impact of conflict on the country. He mentioned the loss of “forty years of our lives” due to tensions between East and West.
The ongoing war in Ukraine and its potential escalation towards a third world war have heightened tensions between East and West. Szijjártó praised US President Donald Trump for reinvigorating diplomatic channels between Washington and Moscow, which he believes reduces the risk of escalation. He emphasized Hungary’s support for dialogue between the US and Russia to achieve a diplomatic resolution.
However, Szijjártó also warned of the challenges posed by “Brussels” to peace negotiations, urging politicians in Brussels not to hinder the progress towards peace. He stressed the importance of the OSCE in fostering continuous dialogue between East and West to maintain Europe’s long-term security and competitiveness.
Szijjártó proposed that any efforts to establish a new European security architecture should involve Türkiye and Russia. He expressed regret over the delay in the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire, which is crucial for the safe return of Hungarian hostages and the repatriation of the slain hostage’s body. Hungary calls for the release of all hostages, including the Hungarian captive, and appreciates mediation efforts by the US, Qatar, and Egypt.
In conclusion, Szijjártó reiterated the significance of East-West cooperation and the role of the OSCE in ensuring peace and stability in Europe. Hungary remains committed to supporting diplomatic initiatives and dialogue between nations to prevent further conflicts and promote security in the region.
