Orbán Funneling Hungarian Taxpayer Money to Fund Putin’s War
Opposition party leaders in the European Parliament election have responded strongly to a recent speech made by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at the Peace March in Budapest.
Klára Dobrev, the EP list leader of DK-MSZP-Párbeszéd, accused Orbán of being the “only pro-war politician in Europe” and claimed that he had made a “dirty deal” with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding gas prices in Hungary. She went on to state that Orbán was using Hungarian money to finance Putin’s war in Ukraine.
Anna Donáth, head of Momentum, criticized Orbán for taking a stance in favor of Russia’s victory and Ukraine’s defeat under the guise of promoting peace. She emphasized that true support for peace would involve standing with Ukraine in its fight for freedom.
Peter Ungár, co-head of LMP, disputed Orbán’s assertion that the EP election was a vote of confidence in the Hungarian government. He clarified that the election was about European issues, such as the green transition, and not about World War III, as Orbán had suggested.
The opposition party leaders’ comments come amid growing tensions surrounding Hungary’s role in European politics and its relationship with Russia. As the election approaches, these statements highlight the differing views and priorities within the political landscape of Hungary and Europe as a whole.
