Orbán government criticizes EU leaders’ handling of crises

Barna Pál Zsigmond, the parliamentary state secretary of EU affairs, criticized the EU leadership for its poor handling of the various crises linked to the war in Ukraine. In a Facebook post on Friday, Zsigmond stated that almost two years since the outbreak of the war, the EU has failed to come up with a strategic response to advance towards peace and minimize economic damage to the bloc.

Furthermore, Zsigmond pointed out that EU leaders have remained silent on issues such as the migration crisis, growing anti-Semitism, and the threat of terrorism. He emphasized that Hungary would support initiatives that aim to move Europe towards peace and prosperity but would not endorse “irresponsible promises” concerning EU institutional and financial issues related to Ukraine.

Zsigmond also voiced his belief that Ukraine’s EU accession should not be forced through at any cost. Instead, he suggested that accession talks with Western Balkan countries should be concluded, as this would be in the interest of Hungary and the entire European continent.

In addition to his comments, Zsigmond referred readers to other related articles, including one on the politicization of EU enlargement and another on Hungary receiving EUR 779.5 million in EU funding.

The statement made by Zsigmond highlights the growing frustration and dissatisfaction with the EU’s handling of the Ukraine crisis and its broader impact on Europe. As the war continues and the associated challenges persist, it is clear that a more cohesive and effective approach is needed from the EU leadership to address these pressing issues.
