The European Parliament Under Fire for Passing Political Judgment Without Evidence
In a recent statement, Fidesz MEP László Trócsányi criticized the left-liberal majority in the European Parliament for acting like a court and passing political judgment without evidence or real reasons. Trócsányi accused the EP of robbing Hungarian researchers and young people of the opportunity to participate in the Erasmus and Horizon EU student programs without providing any explanation or citing false arguments.
Trócsányi defended Hungary’s judicial system, stating that it is in line with European standards and has been granted excellent scores on the EU Justice Scoreboard. He emphasized that Hungary’s participation in the Erasmus and Horizon programs would not endanger the EU’s financial interests and called the EP’s decision “outrageous and unacceptable.”
He also suggested that the decision was motivated by fear that centrist-right political parties would gain strength not only in Hungary but throughout Europe, and criticized the timing of the decision ahead of the June EP elections.
The Hungarian MEP’s remarks come amidst increasing tensions between the conservative government in Hungary and the left-liberal majority in the European Parliament. The clash reflects deeper divisions within the EU over issues of national sovereignty, judicial independence, and political representation.
