Orbán’s EU Group to Review Facebook Censorship

MEPs from the Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament are taking action to address the issue of Facebook censorship with the establishment of a vetting committee. This move was announced by Csaba Dömötör, a Fidesz MEP, who shared the news on Facebook.
Dömötör mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg, the leader of Facebook and Meta, recently admitted that Facebook fact-checkers had been censoring certain content due to political pressure. He specifically mentioned pressure from the outgoing Democrats administration as one of the influencing factors.
“This revelation confirms what many suspected and experienced, but this is not the end of the story. It cannot end here,” Dömötör emphasized.
The MEP highlighted the importance of identifying the censored content, determining who gave the orders, and investigating whether it amounted to interference in the domestic affairs of European countries.
“Many members of the European Parliament often talk about freedom of speech and constitutional values. Now, it’s time to see how seriously they take these principles,” Dömötör remarked.
The initiative to address Facebook censorship comes at a time when concerns about online censorship and freedom of expression are at the forefront. It remains to be seen how the vetting committee will operate and what impact it will have on addressing these issues within the European Parliament.
