Orbán’s Fidesz secures decisive win in Tolna 2 by-election

Krisztina Csibi, the candidate of the ruling Fidesz-Christian Democrat alliance, emerged victorious in Sunday’s by-election in Tolna County’s 2nd electoral district in southwestern Hungary. With close to two-thirds of the vote, Csibi secured a significant lead over her opponents.

According to data released by the National Election Office, Csibi garnered 11,913 votes, representing 63.7 percent of all votes cast. Meanwhile, Dóra Dúró of the opposition Mi Hazánk party received 3,588 votes (19.18 percent), László Takács of the Democratic Coalition received 2,055 votes (10.99 percent), independent candidate Gábor Harangozó received 437 votes (2.34 percent), independent Ernő Vilcsek received 380 votes (2.03 percent), and Pál Péter Ágoston of the Second Reform Age party received 330 votes (1.76 percent).

The by-election was necessitated by the passing of Árpád János Potápi, who served as the Fidesz MP for Tolna County’s 2nd district and state secretary for policies for Hungarians across the borders until his death in October last year.

The victory of Krisztina Csibi reflects the continued support for the Fidesz-Christian Democrat alliance in the region. Csibi’s win will see her take up the parliamentary seat previously held by Potápi, further solidifying the ruling party’s presence in Tolna County’s electoral landscape.
