Celebrating Nurgisa Tlendiyev: A Tribute to a Legendary Kazakh Composer
ASTANA – On April 1, the Otyrar Sazy folklore-ethnographic orchestra, alongside other prominent Kazakh musicians, came together to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the renowned Kazakh composer and conductor, Nurgisa Tlendiyev. The grand event took place at the Qazaq Concert in Astana, where the best of Tlendiyev’s works were showcased to honor his remarkable contributions to Kazakh music.
Tlendiyev was acclaimed for his exceptional talent as a composer, crafting timeless melodies and orchestral pieces that resonate deeply with the Kazakh people. Through Otyrar Sazy, he introduced a rich variety of Kazakh instrumental colors and textures into classical orchestra music, leaving a lasting impact on the music scene.
The concert program featured popular songs like "Karlygash" (Swallow Birds), "Ata Tolgau" (Father’s Song), and "Oz Elim" (My Homeland), as well as traditional musical compositions known as kuis. Tlendiyev’s daughter, Dinzukhra Tlendiyeva, continues his legacy by serving as the artistic director and principal conductor of the Otyrar Sazy orchestra.
Reflecting on her father’s legacy, Tlendiyeva shared insights into his creative process and personal life. She described Tlendiyev as a strict yet passionate composer who demanded excellence from musicians, while also being a loving father and husband at home. His unique working style, characterized by late-night bursts of inspiration and a handwritten score ritual, left a lasting impression on those who knew him well.
During the concert, Kazakh singer Zhubanysh Zheksenuly delivered a moving performance of Tlendiyev’s "Azheme" (To My Grandmother) song, highlighting the enduring impact of Tlendiyev’s works on future generations. Zheksenuly expressed confidence that Tlendiyev’s music will continue to resonate with Kazakh people for years to come, preserving the essence of Kazakh culture and heritage.
The anniversary concert marked the beginning of a series of celebratory events honoring Tlendiyev’s centennial. His legacy will also be recognized on an international scale by organizations like UNESCO and the International Organization of Turkic Culture (TÜRKSOY), ensuring that his contributions to Kazakh music are celebrated worldwide.
