Over 10 million people displaced in Sudan, says UN

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) spokesperson, Mohammedali Abunajela, recently addressed the ongoing displacement crisis in Sudan. Abunajela highlighted the alarming number of displaced individuals in the country, exceeding 10 million due to conflicts. He stated that over 2 million Sudanese have sought refuge abroad, with many heading to neighboring countries such as Chad, South Sudan, and Egypt.

The civil war in Sudan, stemming from a power struggle between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (HDK) following the overthrow of Omar al-Bashir’s 30-year rule by a popular uprising, has been raging for over a year. The conflict has engulfed most states in Sudan, with the army controlling the north and east regions while the HDK holds sway in the west and south.

Despite various peace initiatives and talks initiated by international and regional actors, including Saudi Arabia, the USA, Egypt, and the Intergovernmental Authority for Development in East Africa, efforts to end the war have been unsuccessful. The United Nations reports that over 16,000 people have lost their lives in the Sudan conflicts, creating the world’s largest displacement crisis and hunger emergency, affecting over 25 million people in need of humanitarian assistance.
