Over 160 illegal oil refineries destroyed in Nigeria
NNPCL Group Executive Director Mele Kyari has reported a significant increase in oil theft and vandalism incidents in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta region. According to Kyari, approximately 400 incidents were reported by both government and private security agencies in the past week alone.
In response to these growing challenges, NNPCL and the Nigerian army have been conducting operations in the Niger Delta to tackle the issue. Kyari stated that during these operations, 165 illegal oil refineries were destroyed and 39 illegal pipeline connections were also dismantled.
The impact of these incidents is not insignificant, with Nigerian Senator Ned Nwoko revealing that the country suffered more than $3 billion in losses last year due to increased oil theft and attacks on pipelines.
Nigeria is home to approximately 37 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, accounting for 3.1 percent of the world’s total reserves. As one of the top 15 crude oil producers globally, the country ranks 8th in terms of oil reserves and 6th in oil exports.
However, the Delta region, where many of these oil fields are located, continues to face challenges from armed groups carrying out sabotage activities. These incidents not only disrupt oil production but also contribute to clashes and kidnappings in the region.
With ongoing efforts to combat oil theft and vandalism, authorities are working to ensure the security and stability of Nigeria’s vital oil industry.
