Massive Forest Fire in Japan’s Iwate City Threatens Settlements
Authorities in the city of Ofunato in Iwate, Japan, have issued a statement regarding a devastating forest fire that has swept through the area. According to state television NHK, approximately 2,100 hectares of land have been turned to ash, prompting officials to call upon over 2,000 firefighters from across the country to help combat the blaze.
The authorities have warned that the smoke is heading towards nearby settlements, causing damage to more than 80 buildings in its path. Air and ground teams are continuing their efforts to contain the fire, with approximately 1,200 residents being evacuated as a precaution.
Ofunato Governor Fuchigami Kiyoshi expressed concern about the possibility of the flames spreading further. The forest fire, which began on February 26th in the northeast of Japan, has already claimed one life, with a burned corpse discovered on February 27th during search and rescue operations.
The situation remains critical as firefighters battle to control the inferno and prevent further devastation in the region. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and follow evacuation orders as necessary to ensure their safety.
