Over 3,000 Nesting Sites Prepared for Spring Arrivals of Storks

As spring approaches, the storks are getting ready to return from their winter nesting grounds. E.ON Hungária Group is prepared for the arrival of these feathered guests and has taken various measures to protect them. A total of 3,200 nests have been set up for the stork pairs in Budapest, Transdanubia, and Pest County.

This year, the bird protection projects of E.ON Hungária Group will cost hundreds of millions of forints, fully funded by the energy company that operates the power grid in the mentioned areas. The company has undergrounded power lines near some landfills and is also installing new nests and nest boxes on high-voltage poles for kestrels and falcons.

E.ON has planned to make more than 250 pylons bird-friendly this year, with some of the work to be completed before the storks arrive. The poles will be equipped with bird-friendly surfaces, long insulators, and bird perches for safety.

New nest boxes will be installed on the poles to assist the storks in breeding, with over 100 planned for installation this year. Any nests damaged by storms will be rebuilt, and those at risk of falling will be repaired by conservationists.

At least 3,200 nesting sites are already prepared for stork pairs on E.ON’s power grids in Transdanubia and Pest County this year. In 2024, 548 chicks were ringed in Transdanubia with the help of the electric utility company.

E.ON intervenes with abandoned nests during the autumn-winter months when nest construction, repair, and network modifications take place. Nest relocations are done after consultations and advice from bird conservationists from national parks.

The company is dedicated to creating a safe environment for the storks and other bird species in the region. It is crucial to protect these animals and ensure their well-being as they return to their summer habitats.
