Overcrowding in Slovenian Prisons: Occupancy Rate Reaches 139%
The Slovenian prison system is facing a crisis as the occupancy rates have reached alarming levels, according to reports in the national media. The surge in inmates can be attributed to human smugglers who are bringing irregular immigrants into the country, promising them passage to Europe.
As of February 26, the Slovenian Prison Administration reported a total of 1808 individuals in prisons, with an average occupancy rate of 139 percent. The current staff of 550 personnel is said to be insufficient to handle the growing number of inmates.
The capital city, Ljubljana, is facing the brunt of the overcrowding, with the occupancy rate in the local prison exceeding 200 percent. Across the country, there are 850 foreign nationals imprisoned on charges related to human trafficking.
The situation in Slovenian prisons calls for immediate action to address the overcrowding and ensure the safety and security of both inmates and staff.
