Fazilet Özdenefe Receives Conscientious Objection Initiative Activists
Deputy Speaker of the Assembly of the Republic, Fazilet Özdenefe, recently met with activists from the Conscientious Objection Initiative in Cyprus. Among them was Mustafa Hürben, who faced legal action for refusing a call to mobilization, and whose case was discussed in the Military Court.
During the meeting, Murat Kanatlı, Spokesperson of the Conscientious Objection Initiative in Cyprus, highlighted the need for legal regulations regarding conscientious objection. Referring to the decision of the Constitutional Court, he emphasized that this issue should be discussed in Parliament.
Fazilet Özdenefe expressed her concern over the lack of legislation on an issue that is considered a human right in the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights and in international practice. She acknowledged the need for the Assembly of the Republic to make the necessary legal regulation.
Despite previous attempts to bring conscientious objection to the point of becoming law, Özdenefe stated that there is still work to be done. She assured the delegation of her commitment to raising the issue in Parliament and thanked them for their advocacy.
The meeting marks a step forward in the ongoing efforts to address the issue of conscientious objection in Cyprus, and the activists are hopeful that the necessary legal regulations will be put in place.
