Pakistan Addresses Account Hacking, Denies Loan Appeal Linked to Operation Sindoor

Pakistani Economic Affairs Division’s Social Media Account Hacked
Islamabad, Pakistan – The Economic Affairs Division of Pakistan confirmed that its official account on the social media platform X has been hacked. This breach included a fake post that called for the international community to provide additional loans to Islamabad, citing losses purportedly incurred due to India’s Operation Sindoor.
According to reports from the Pakistani newspaper Business Recorder, officials swiftly dismissed the fraudulent content as misleading. A spokesperson for the ministry stated, "This post has no connection to the ministry and is false. Currently, no content posted on X is affiliated with the ministry."
The hacking incident reportedly took place on the evening of May 8. Access to the platform had been restricted in Pakistan since February 2024 and was only reinstated on May 7, after users could previously connect only via virtual private networks (VPNs).
The event highlights ongoing concerns around cybersecurity, particularly within government communications, as authorities work to navigate the complexities of digital engagement in a rapidly evolving online landscape.
