Rising Tensions Between Pakistan and India Following Kashmir Attack
In a recent interview with Geo News, Pakistani official ASIF commented on the escalating tensions between Pakistan and India following a tragic attack in the Kashmir region. The incident, which occurred on April 22, resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals and left many more injured when armed assailants opened fire on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir.
ASIF highlighted the various forms of aggression, emphasizing that threats extend beyond physical violence. He warned that any interference with water resources, such as constructions by India on the Indus River, could lead to dire humanitarian consequences in Pakistan.
"If India attempts to build any structures related to the Indus, Pakistan will take necessary actions to destroy such endeavors," ASIF stated, showcasing the critical nature of the dispute over water rights.
Escalating Diplomatic Conflict
In response to the attack, India has accused Pakistan of harboring the attackers, which led to a swift diplomatic fallout. The Indian government suspended the "Indus Waters Agreement," a crucial treaty governing water-sharing from the rivers flowing from the Indian-administered region into Pakistan. Furthermore, India ordered the expulsion of Pakistani diplomats within a week and announced the cancellation of all existing visas for Pakistani citizens.
In retaliation, Pakistan vehemently denied any involvement in the attack and took stringent measures, including limiting the number of Indian diplomatic personnel in Islamabad. The Pakistani government has declared any intervention in their river systems as a potential cause for war, further escalating the situation. Additionally, all trade routes with India have been closed, and airspace restrictions have been enforced.
