Tensions Escalate Between India and Pakistan Following Terrorist Attack in Kashmir
Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, has addressed the recent terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, describing the situation as a potential flashpoint for escalating conflict in the region.
In a written statement, Tarar condemned India for what he termed "unfounded allegations" regarding the origins of the attack. He claimed that reliable intelligence indicated India’s intention to conduct military operations within the next 24 to 36 hours. "Unfortunately, India appears to be choosing a path of dangerous conflict rather than opting for diplomacy," he remarked, emphasizing Pakistan’s rejection of calls for an independent investigation into the attacks.
He also highlighted that the international community must recognize India’s responsibility for any ensuing consequences, firmly stating that Pakistan would respond in a "definite and determined" manner to any aggressions.
Details of the Attack
On April 22, armed assailants opened fire on tourists in a popular area of Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of 26 individuals and injuries to many others. In response to the attack, India accused Pakistan of being behind the incident, leading to a significant diplomatic escalation.
India announced the suspension of the Indus Waters Agreement, a critical treaty on water sharing, and called upon Pakistani diplomats to leave the country within a week. Furthermore, India halted all visa services for Pakistani citizens, effectively canceling all existing visas.
In retaliation, Pakistan has denied India’s allegations and taken steps to limit the number of diplomatic personnel from India in Islamabad. Additionally, it declared that any interventions concerning shared rivers would be regarded as acts of war, halting all trade with India and closing its airspace to Indian flights.
