Pakistani Student Exodus Impacts Kyrgyzstan’s Reputation and Economy
Dozens of Pakistani students have fled Kyrgyzstan in light of recent safety concerns following mob attacks on South Asians in the capital city of Bishkek. The violent incidents have left many students injured and their parents anxious for their safety.
Calls have been made for the Pakistani government to arrange for the return of these students, with some expressing hesitation about resuming their studies in Kyrgyzstan. Concerns over safety have also prompted embassies, including those of the U.S. and Turkey, to warn their citizens to be cautious while in Kyrgyzstan.
These unfortunate events have not only jeopardized the well-being of foreign students but also have tarnished Kyrgyzstan’s reputation as a safe destination for international education. The country heavily relies on the revenue generated by foreign students, with English-language universities contributing up to $180 million annually to the economy.
Deputy Education Minister Rasul Abazbek-uulu highlighted the significant economic impact of foreign students, particularly those from India and Pakistan who mainly study medicine in Kyrgyzstan. The overall foreign student population in the country, which stands at approximately 60,000, plays a crucial role in bolstering the economy through their expenditures on tuition, accommodation, and other living expenses.
Despite the recent challenges faced by foreign students in Kyrgyzstan, most locals are welcoming of international students and recognize their positive contributions to the economy and cultural exchange. However, efforts will be needed to rebuild the country’s image as a safe and hospitable destination for students and migrants alike.
