Palestinian Women’s Solidarity Event in Times Square by KADEM
The KADEM delegation, which recently attended the 68th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York, took the time to honor the Palestinian women who lost their lives in Israel’s attacks on Gaza. The commemoration took place in Times Square and was attended by members of the Turkish American community, pro-peace Jews, and US citizens.
During the event, KADEM’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Assoc. Dr. Saliha Okur Gümrükçüoğlu, spoke about the ongoing violence and genocide that Palestinian women have endured at the hands of Israel for generations. She emphasized the importance of not forgetting the injustices faced by Palestinian women and standing in solidarity with them.
Gümrükçüoğlu also highlighted the need for the international community to take a stand against Israel’s actions in Gaza, stating that history will judge those who remain silent in the face of such atrocities. The event included the untying of scarves in the colors of the Palestinian flag, symbolizing the women who lost their lives in Gaza, under the slogan “Free Palestine.”
Following the event, Gümrükçüoğlu expressed gratitude for the support shown and the awareness raised about the plight of Palestinian women. KADEM’s Deputy Secretary General for Communications, Semanur Sönmez Yaman, explained the significance of choosing Times Square as the location for the event, emphasizing the importance of continuing solidarity until Palestine is free.
The event garnered more attention than expected, with thousands of people witnessing the demonstration. One attendee, a US citizen named Beth, voiced her support for bringing attention to the oppression in Gaza and advocating for the rights of all women to live without fear of violence or oppression.
Overall, the event in Times Square served as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by Palestinian women and the importance of standing together in solidarity for justice and equality.
