Panel on Gender Equality and Peace Process Held in Kyrenia
A panel on gender equality and the peace process was recently organized by the Kyrenia Thought Association and Peace Association at the Dome Hotel. The event aimed to discuss the role of gender in promoting peace and fostering a more inclusive society.
During the opening remarks, Girne Thought Association President Ziya Tüzüz highlighted the importance of addressing gender issues, particularly in the context of peacebuilding. He emphasized the need for regular activities and discussions in Nicosia and Kyrenia to further the cause of peace and equality.
The panel was moderated by Özge Tahiroğlu, a member of the Board of Directors of Kyrenia Thought Association. Among the speakers was Doğuş Derya, Chairman of the CTP Deputy and Women’s Organization, who spoke on the topic of “Hyper Masculinity and Feminist Struggle”. Derya stressed the importance of challenging autocratic administrations and male-dominated regimes in order to advance the feminist movement.
Dr. İpek Borman, another panelist, pointed out the lack of female representation in negotiations and leadership roles. Despite the presence of highly qualified women in various fields, she noted that negotiating tables and decision-making processes continue to be dominated by men. Borman also highlighted the male-dominated nature of the Cyprus negotiation process, calling for greater inclusion of women in peacebuilding efforts.
Overall, the panel shed light on the need for a more gender-inclusive approach to peace processes and emphasized the importance of empowering women in leadership positions for a more sustainable and peaceful future. The discussions at the event provided valuable insights into the intersection of gender, power, and peacebuilding efforts in Cyprus and beyond.
