Parliament Approves Tightening Right of Assembly, New Protest in Budapest

Hungary passed the 15th Constitutional Amendment on Monday with significant support from its parliament. The amendment, proposed by the ruling parties, reaffirms that gender at birth is biologically determined as male or female. It aims to protect the “natural order” and prevent any attempts to change one’s sex at birth.

The new changes emphasize the importance of children’s development and identity based on their gender at birth. It also grants the right to use cash, stressing its significance in preventing vulnerability to electronic banking systems. Moreover, the amendment prohibits the production, abuse, distribution, and promotion of drugs to uphold public safety and order.

Additionally, the amendment allows prosecutors, with exceptions, to work until the age of 70. It also grants the government the authority to suspend or deviate from laws under martial law or emergency situations without parliamentary authorization.

In response to the amendment, the opposition Momentum Movement organized a protest in front of Parliament. Protesters demanded the President of the Republic withhold his signature from the amendment, citing concerns about freedom, fundamental rights, and freedom of assembly. Leaders at the protest voiced their resistance to the government’s actions, emphasizing the importance of upholding democracy and freedoms for all citizens.

Despite facing resistance from protesters, the government stands by its decision to implement the constitutional changes. The amendment will take effect gradually, with some provisions coming into force on January 1 next year. The ongoing debate surrounding the amendment and subsequent protests reflect a divided society grappling with issues of freedom, identity, and democracy in Hungary.
