Party Votes in 2018: Increase or Decrease?

Turkish Elections Result in Inconclusive Outcome

On May 14, 2023, Turkey held its presidential election which resulted in an inconclusive outcome, as none of the candidates received the required 50+1 percent of the vote. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of the AK Party received 49 percent of the vote, followed by Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu of the CHP with 45 percent, and Sinan Ogan with 5 percent.

This election result was compared to the 2018 presidential election, in which Erdoğan received 52.59 percent of the vote, defeating his opponents Muharrem İnce, Selahattin Demirtaş, Meral Akşener, and Temel Karamollaoğlu.

In the parliamentary general elections of 2018, the AK Party received 42.56 percent of the vote and had 295 deputies. However, in the recent May 14 elections, the party’s vote percentage decreased to 35.47 percent, resulting in 267 deputies. On the other hand, the CHP increased its vote rate from 22.65 percent in the 2018 elections to 25.23 percent in the recent elections, gaining 167 deputies.

The MHP party increased the number of its deputies, while the HDP (Green Left Party), which received 11.70 percent of the vote in 2018, saw a decrease in its vote percentage to 8.77 in the recent elections.

The results of the recent Turkish elections reveal a sharp division in the country’s political landscape, with none of the candidates able to win a clear majority. As a result, the formation of a government and the future direction of Turkey remain uncertain.
