Patriots for Europe Group Rejects EU Funding for NGOs as Alternative to USAID

European Parliament’s Patriots for Europe Group Pushes for Transparency and Accountability
The Patriots for Europe Group in the European Parliament has taken a significant step towards establishing a committee dedicated to transparency and accountability. Announced by Kinga Gál, Fidesz MEP and First Vice-President of the group, the initiative has garnered the requisite 180 signatures to be submitted to the Conference of Presidents, an influential body within the Parliament.
In a press conference alongside Jordan Bardella, President of the Patriots for Europe Group, Gál critiqued EU institutions for their long-standing focus on democratically elected governments. She asserted that these institutions often misinterpret the rule of law while neglecting corruption and undue influence within their own operations.
"This should be uncovered by a committee of inquiry," she insisted, emphasizing the need to address the opaque financing of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Gál highlighted alarming statistics from the European Commission, which revealed that between 2019 and 2023, the Commission signed approximately 37,000 contracts with NGOs, amounting to a staggering 17 billion euros. She underscored the necessity of making NGO funding transparent across all EU member states.
"This data is shocking; we cannot allow European taxpayers’ money to be further directed into political activist networks disguised as civil society," Gál stated, voicing concerns that certain left-leaning factions in the European Parliament are advocating for the replacement of funds previously allocated by USAID to NGOs.
She cautioned, "European taxpayers’ money should not go to political activist networks that weaken state borders, undermine farmers, and challenge democratically elected governments."
Furthermore, Gál expressed frustration with the ongoing situation in Ukraine, criticizing the repeated parliamentary debates that have failed to yield peace. "The EU was established for the purpose of peacekeeping, and military solutions will not resolve this conflict," she observed. Instead, she advocates for a diplomatic resolution, highlighting the critical need for a new European strategy centered on the interests of citizens.
As the European Commission aims to expedite Ukraine’s accession to the EU, Gál warns that this initiative, if driven by political motives like the proposed 2030 deadline, could have far-reaching ramifications for economic and security stability across member states.
In conclusion, the Patriots for Europe Group’s initiative not only seeks to enhance accountability regarding NGO financing but also aims to foster a more citizen-centric approach within the EU, ensuring that the interests of everyday people are prioritized over political agendas.
