Payments from Former Polish Orlen CEO Connected to Hungarian PM Orbán’s Son-in-law

Former CEO of Polish company Orlen and newly elected MEP, Daniel Obajtek, has come under scrutiny for receiving payments from a company linked to Viktor Orbán’s son-in-law, István Tiborcz. Reports indicate that Obajtek, who is said to be hiding in Budapest, is receiving a monthly income of EUR 15,000 from Bayer Construct, as per his asset declaration.

The disclosure of these payments has raised concerns, especially with the opposition PiS coalition supporting Poland’s involvement with the European Public Prosecutor’s Office to investigate corruption. Despite no formal charges being filed against Obajtek, there is speculation that charges may arise in the future.

Efforts to summon Obajtek for questioning by the Polish Prosecutor’s Office and Parliament’s Investigative Committee have been unsuccessful, as he is reportedly not listed at any Polish address. His absence has fueled rumors surrounding his whereabouts and intentions, as photos suggest he is in Budapest, contradicting his claims.

Obajtek, affiliated with the Law and Justice (PiS) party, won a seat in the European Parliament in June and has been granted immunity in the EU. However, Polish authorities seek to question him regarding various matters, including the merger of state-owned energy companies Orlen and Lotos, and other financial transactions.

While Obajtek denies allegations of evading impeachment and fleeing to Budapest, questions surrounding his involvement with Orbán’s son-in-law and other associates continue to linger. The ongoing investigation reflects the complexities of political and financial ties within the European landscape.
