Peter Magyar: Tisza Party Group Refuses to Support Incumbent Budapest Department Mayors, Avoids Coalitions
The Tisza party’s group in the Budapest Assembly will not be supporting the incumbent deputy mayors, as per the statement made by party leader Péter Magyar on Facebook. Magyar stated that the Budapest voters’ clear verdict on the Democratic Coalition and the Socialists’ work has influenced this decision. Additionally, the party has decided not to enter into coalitions with any other party groups.
Following the local elections on June 9th, where Gergely Karácsony retained the mayor’s seat, Magyar highlighted that voters have expressed their disinterest in back-room deals and the old leftist direction of politics. Despite inviting all party leaders for talks after the election, only Fidesz declined the invitation. This led Tisza to opt for staying away from coalitions in the Budapest Assembly.
Magyar urged Karácsony to nominate deputy mayors who could ensure the city’s stable financial situation and who had the potential to secure a substantial majority in the assembly. He made it clear that the new assembly would not back the incumbent deputy mayors.
The party leader emphasized that the municipality was facing financial instability primarily due to government restrictions. Magyar called for a transparent and public regulation of relations between the government and the municipality by Karácsony and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
As Tisza takes its stance against coalitions and incumbent deputy mayors in the Budapest Assembly, the political dynamics in the city are expected to see a significant shift.
