Pilot’s Unexpected Response to Lightning Strikes on Wizz Air Plane

Wizz Air Plane Damaged by Lightning Strikes, Pilot Turns Back to Georgia

According to reports, a Wizz Air plane flying from Kutaisi, Georgia to Prague, Czechia was struck by lightning twice, causing damage to the aircraft’s lightning defence system. The pilot made the decision to turn back to Georgia instead of continuing the journey to Prague, ensuring the safety of the passengers on board.

Passengers on the flight reported hearing two loud lightning strikes and a subsequent announcement from the flight attendants regarding the damaged system. The plane safely landed back in Kutaisi, where mandatory inspections were carried out on the aircraft to assess the extent of the damage.

Speaking to index.hu, pilot trainer Zsolt Szüle explained that the outer layer of the plane is covered with metal, acting as a Faraday cage to conduct lightning strikes safely. However, in the event of damage to the aircraft’s lightning defence system, the pilot is required to land the plane as a precautionary measure.

In a similar incident in June, another Wizz Air flight bound for London was also struck by lightning. Despite the dramatic event, passengers described the experience as a minor disturbance, with the plane continuing on its journey without major disruptions.

A passenger on the London flight even captured the moment of impact on camera, showing the lightning striking the nose of the plane and discharging onto the wings. The footage, which has since been shared online, provides a rare glimpse into the effects of lightning strikes on aircraft.

Wizz Air has confirmed the incidents and assured passengers that their safety is always a top priority. As the airline continues to investigate the damage caused by the lightning strikes, passengers can rest assured knowing that precautions are in place to ensure their safety during flights.
