PM Orbán’s revelations on the Pride ban legislation
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán addressed the controversial Pride law that was recently accepted by the Hungarian Parliament amidst smoke bomb explosions. He provided insight into when and how the police will enforce the new regulations in relation to the Budapest Pride 2025 event.
Budapest Mayor Gergely Christmas expressed confidence in the upcoming Budapest Pride 2025 march, which supports LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies. Despite the parliament and government’s ban on such events, Christmas stated that the people of Budapest would still participate in the march. However, he did not raise the LGBTQ+ flag at City Hall, which led to criticism from Mayor Krisztina Baranyi of Ferencváros, who called him the most cowardly mayor in Budapest’s history.
The new Hungarian Pride law is intended to prohibit events like the Budapest Pride march in order to shield children from witnessing LGBTQ+ individuals in public spaces. The Orbán government believes that such displays could negatively impact children’s development.
Prime Minister Orbán disclosed some details about the implementation of the new law, stating that while they have not yet banned the Pride march, they have established constitutional rights to prioritize children’s well-being over other citizens’ rights. He emphasized the goal of safeguarding children through these regulations.
Organizers of the Pride march will need to seek approval from authorities and abide by their decisions, with the possibility of facing fines for non-compliance. Orbán stressed that attendees would not be arrested but would be penalized for breaking the law.
