Police quickly halt anti-Orbán government protest in Hungary

Anti-government protests in Budapest were met with a swift response from authorities on Tuesday, leading to a quick end to the demonstration. Independent MP Ákos Hadházy and the Momentum Movement had planned a protest at Ferenciek Square, but the Supreme Court denied their request to hold it on the Erzsébet Bridge due to traffic concerns and potential disruptions to others’ rights.

Interestingly, a pro-Fidesz demonstration organized by a government-friendly artist was allowed to take place at the foot of the Erzsébet Bridge, while the anti-government protest was banned. Police warned participants ahead of the gathering that any unlawful actions would lead to intervention.

Despite the ban, protesters gathered at Ferenciek Square and chanted slogans against the government. Attempts to block Szabad Sajtó Road were met with a strong police presence, with over 100 officers preventing any disruption to traffic flow. Some protesters sat on the Liberty Bridge, leading to their removal by police.

The police emphasized that their actions were aimed at ensuring traffic safety. Momentum Movement stated that they would cover any fines imposed on demonstrators. Hadházy announced that the series of protests would continue on May 1, urging peaceful and resolute participation. He also mentioned that the police had not licensed the planned May 1 protest, creating a new situation.

By 7:30 PM, the Liberty Bridge had been reopened to traffic, and transportation resumed on Szabad Sajtó Road and the Erzsébet Bridge without further disruption. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions between protesters and authorities in Hungary.
