Popular Career Paths for Hungarian University Students Unveiled

Engineering, programming, and medicine are the careers that STEM (science and technology) students in Hungary would most like to pursue, according to a recent local survey conducted by Siemens Zrt. and the UNIside higher education portal. The survey targeted university students in the fields of computer science, engineering, and natural sciences, revealing that most students are drawn towards these technical and healthcare professions. Additionally, careers in data science, artificial intelligence, and management were also considered to be ‘cool’ by the respondents.

The survey indicated that nearly half of the students envision their future at foreign-owned multinational companies (49%) or large domestic companies (44%) after completing their higher education. Meanwhile, a significant portion of respondents (39%) expressed their interest in working at domestic small or medium-sized enterprises.

The research further highlighted the students’ independence in choosing their field of study, with two-thirds of the respondents deciding where to study on their own. Career aspirations and professional interests played a significant role in guiding their choices, followed by expected salary and university rankings.

Lívia Pintér, co-founder and editor-in-chief of the UNIside portal, commented on the results, emphasizing the students’ awareness and interest in STEM fields. The survey also revealed the division among students regarding favorite and least favorite subjects, with mathematics and IT ranking among the top three in both categories.

In terms of aligning university studies with initial expectations, the majority of respondents (59%) felt that the topics and subjects they are studying are in line with their initial aspirations. While most students found it challenging to meet the requirements of higher education, many expressed a desire to extend their studies abroad to further enhance their knowledge.

When it comes to future career prospects, recent graduates showed a preference for starting their careers at foreign-owned multinational companies, large domestic companies, or small and medium-sized enterprises. The survey also highlighted the popularity of engineering, IT, and healthcare professions among students in technical and natural science fields.

Overall, the survey aimed to better understand the motivations of young people in the latest industrial technologies and to match job opportunities with their desired future prospects. As young professionals in Hungary seek faster career advancement opportunities in the age of Industry 4.0, continuous learning and openness to professional development are deemed essential.
