Hungarian Postal Service Issues Special Stamp Block to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Rubik’s Cube
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the patenting of the Rubik’s Cube, the Hungarian Postal Service, Magyar Posta, has released a special stamp block. The Rubik’s Cube is a source of national pride in Hungary and is recognized worldwide as an iconic symbol of Hungarian culture, engineering, and ingenuity.
Marton Nagy, Minister for National Economy, highlighted the significance of the Rubik’s Cube as a representation of Hungary’s ability to make a global impact through innovation and creativity. The government chose this invention as the symbol of the Hungarian EU Presidency in 2024, emphasizing its importance in inspiring industries such as toy manufacturing, design, and educational tools.
The numbered stamp block and accompanying philatelic publications were created in collaboration with Spin Master Toys UK Limited, based on designs by graphic artist Attila André Elekes. The stamp image depicts a shuffled Rubik’s Cube, with square details on the block edges resembling the individual colors of the cube. The special envelope features an image of the Retro Rubik’s cube and the Hungarian version of the official 50th-anniversary logo.
The stamp block is available in exclusive sets, allowing collectors to assemble the Rubik’s Cube stamp set or opt for the pre-made cube-shaped version. Additionally, the cube and block holder can double as a special ornament for enthusiasts.
Created in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor Ernő Rubik, the Rubik’s Cube has remained a popular puzzle worldwide. Despite reaching its peak popularity in the 1980s, it continues to be utilized by “speedcubers” who compete for the fastest solving times. The World Cube Association, established in 2003, organizes competitions globally and recognizes world records in “speedcubing.”
The special stamp block serves as a tribute to the enduring legacy of the Rubik’s Cube and its significance in Hungarian culture and innovation. Celebrating both the invention’s 50th anniversary and Ernő Rubik’s 80th birthday in 2024, the stamp block encapsulates the timeless appeal and impact of this iconic puzzle.
