Postponement of CHP Candidate Announcement: What’s the Reason?
The Candidate Selection Process Continues in CHP
The candidate selection process in the Republican People’s Party (CHP) is still ongoing, with the expectation that statements will resume next week. So far, 353 candidates have been announced, but the question remains: When will the other candidates be announced?
Allegations have surfaced that there is a lack of consensus on the candidates in certain cities expected to be announced. Interestingly, these cities are considered to be strongholds for the CHP. This lack of agreement has delayed the announcement of 150 candidates, which were initially expected this week.
The postponement was attributed to Can Atalay’s decision, which took precedence over the local election agenda. Among the cities that were expected to have candidates announced this week were significant urban centers such as Adana, Tekirdağ, and Antalya.
In Antalya, surveys have raised doubts regarding Metropolitan Mayor Muhittin Böcek’s candidacy, with objections being raised. Meanwhile, the Antalya Provincial Directorate and the provincial organization are pushing for the candidacy of Muratpaşa Mayor Ümit Uysal.
Before the Party Assembly, the Central Executive Board members evaluated the situation and decided to continue with Özlem Çerçioğlu in Aydın and Zeydan Karalar in Adana. Additionally, preparations are being made to submit the name of former Deputy Candan Yüceer in Tekirdağ to the approval of the Party Assembly.
As for the highly anticipated Istanbul candidate from the AK Party, all eyes are on the official statement.
Regarding the Izmir candidate, Chairman Özgür Özel has stated that if the current president will be a candidate, it will be announced. A delegation had previously visited Izmir to work on selecting a candidate, and a report was submitted to the Headquarters. Nonetheless, there are talks of sending another delegation to Izmir in the near future.
