Potential Deadly Earthquake Warning in Kayseri: New Report Released

A recent report has warned of the potential for earthquakes up to 7.5 magnitudes in the Kayseri region, according to Geological Engineer Adnan Evsen. The study conducted by the Mineral Technical Exploration (MTA) revealed that faults in the area, previously believed to have a maximum earthquake potential of 6.2 magnitudes, could actually produce much stronger earthquakes.
Evsen explained that historical records show evidence of 17 earthquakes in the Kayseri region since 25,400 BC, with the potential for even stronger earthquakes on faults such as Erkilet, Erciyes, and Yeşilhisar. The report specifically highlighted the Erkilet Fault as capable of producing an earthquake of magnitude 7.5, while the Erciyes Fault could have a magnitude of 7.3.
Studies conducted on the faults also indicated that earthquakes could occur in cycles of 3,000 to 5,000 years, with the last earthquakes on these faults dating back thousands of years. Evsen emphasized the importance of understanding the potential for earthquakes in the region and the difference in impact between earthquakes of different magnitudes.
In the event of a 7.5 magnitude earthquake, settlements within a 100-kilometer radius of Kayseri could be affected, including the center of the city and surrounding areas like Kocasinan, Melikgazi, Talas, İncesu, and Yeşilhisar. It is crucial for residents in these areas to be prepared and aware of the risks posed by potential earthquakes.
As the threat of earthquakes looms over the region, it is essential for authorities and residents to take necessary precautions and be prepared for any seismic activity that may occur in the future. Stay informed and stay safe.
