Power Shift: Mongolia’s Move towards Coalition Politics

Mongolia Embraces Coalition Politics: A New Era of Political Power
Mongolia’s Democratic Party (DP) recently marked its 35th anniversary, with First Deputy Prime Minister Luvsannyamyn Gantumur praising its role in shaping the nation’s democratic path. However, beyond the celebration, the political landscape in Mongolia is undergoing significant changes. Old rules are no longer applicable, and coalition-building has become the new form of power currency.
The 2024 parliamentary elections introduced a mixed-member proportional representation system, altering Mongolia’s electoral dynamics. Coalition governments are no longer rare exceptions but rather the new normal for the coming years.
This shift raises important questions about the impact of proportionality on democratic legitimacy. Does it strengthen the democratic process, or does it risk dividing political coherence and undermining accountability?
As Mongolia navigates this new era of coalition politics, the country faces both opportunities and challenges. The future will depend on how political parties navigate these changes and whether they can work together effectively to serve the interests of the Mongolian people.
