Kazakh President Pays State Visit to Qatar, Signs Deals Worth $18 Billion
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev recently paid a state visit to Qatar, emphasizing the growing interest in strengthening ties between the two nations. This visit resulted in the signing of commercial agreements worth nearly $18 billion, marking a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship.
The two countries celebrated 30 years of diplomatic ties in 2023, and their relationship has been characterized by frequent high-level contacts. President Tokayev and Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani have participated in several meetings and phone conversations, highlighting the depth of their engagement.
During his visit to Qatar, President Tokayev met with the Emir of Qatar and the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, affirming the intent to elevate bilateral cooperation to the level of a strategic partnership. Both leaders expressed a keen interest in exploring areas such as energy, trade, economic, and investment projects, signifying a new chapter in their relationship.
The investment roundtable during the visit witnessed the signing of commercial agreements worth $18 billion, with a focus on the energy sector. High-level discussions also addressed the need for cooperation in renewable energy and the potential for collaboration in sectors such as agriculture, medicine, and transport and logistics.
President Tokayev proposed increasing bilateral trade up to $500 million, emphasizing Kazakhstan’s role as a gateway to lucrative markets in Eurasia. The two leaders also discussed ongoing projects with substantial potential, including those in the healthcare sector, and expressed optimism about the prospects for collaboration.
The strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and Qatar has also extended to multilateral cooperation.
