President Sulyok Facing Removal from Office
Klára Dobrev Calls for Removal of President Tamás Sulyok from Office
Klára Dobrev, who is leading the party list of the Democratic Coalition-Socialists-Párbeszéd alliance in the upcoming European Parliament elections, has made a bold move by calling for the removal of President Tamás Sulyok from office. In an online press conference held on Sunday, Dobrev urged MPs from her party as well as the Socialist Party and Párbeszéd to initiate proceedings in Parliament to remove President Sulyok.
Dobrev pointed out that her party, along with others, had submitted evidence to the chief prosecutor regarding high-value fraud and abuse of office allegations against President Sulyok. A criminal complaint has also been filed in this case. Additionally, Dobrev mentioned that they had written to the deputy head of the Constitutional Court, requesting that Sulyok repay the salary he allegedly took unlawfully as a Constitutional Court judge due to a conflict of interest.
If President Sulyok does not resign voluntarily, Dobrev stated that he could be forcibly removed from office by Parliament. However, initiating such a procedure requires the support of one-fifth of MPs. Dobrev revealed that her party had already begun collecting signatures for this purpose and they were closely monitoring how the ruling Fidesz party would vote at the end of the procedure.
This latest development has added a new layer of complexity to the political landscape in Hungary.
