President Tatar addresses Turkish Cypriot people’s painful journey – BRTK
President Ersin Tatar recently participated in a special program on BRT, discussing the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the 20 July Peace Operation. During the program, President Tatar highlighted the extensive preparations that have been underway for several months in both domestic and international arenas.
Reflecting on the events leading up to July 20, President Tatar emphasized the hardships faced by Turkish Cypriots at the hands of the Greeks, who sought to unite Cyprus with Greece through inhumane treatment and disregard for human rights. He expressed sorrow over the losses suffered by innocent civilians, with some still missing to this day.
President Tatar underscored the significance of July 20, 1974, as a pivotal moment for Turkish Cypriots, noting the necessity for Turkey to intervene following the events of July 15, 1974. He reiterated the importance of bringing peace to both Turkish and Greek populations, as emphasized by the actions taken during the Cyprus Peace Operation.
Despite ongoing challenges, President Tatar remains optimistic about the future of Cyprus, advocating for a two-state solution based on equality. He highlighted the obstacles imposed by the Greek Cypriots and reiterated the need for constructive dialogue to move forward.
President Tatar also emphasized the importance of promoting the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on the global stage, noting the progress made in developing relations with Azerbaijan and other Turkic states. He expressed hope for cooperation between the two states in utilizing natural resources and energy for mutual benefit.
Looking ahead, President Tatar expressed confidence in the TRNC’s ability to engage with the international community and establish meaningful partnerships. As the 50th anniversary of the Peace Operation approaches, President Tatar remains committed to advancing the interests of Turkish Cypriots and building a prosperous future for all stakeholders involved.
