President Ersin Tatar Pays a Visit to Haspolat to Inspect New Border Gate
President Ersin Tatar recently visited Haspolat to inspect the new border gate that is planned to be opened in the region. During his visit, Tatar emphasized the positive impact that a new border gate in Nicosia could have on both the North and the South, highlighting the potential for increased trade and relief for the Metehan Border Gate.
The President was supported by the Nicosia Turkish Municipality and various economic organizations, who voiced their approval for the new border gate. In a press statement at the Haspolat Mukhtar’s Office building, Tatar was accompanied by key figures such as Nicosia Turkish Municipality Mayor Mehmet Harmancı, Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce President Turgay Deniz, and Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry President Ali Kamacıoğlu.
During the inspection with Security Forces Commander Major General İlker Görgülü, President Tatar expressed his support for the opening of a second gate in Nicosia to facilitate vehicle passage. He noted that while there have been criticisms and alternative suggestions from the Greek side, opening a new gate in Haspolat would significantly reduce traffic congestion at the Metehan Border Gate and enhance trade activities.
President Tatar stressed the importance of taking steps towards opening the new gate in Haspolat, highlighting the common will and strong support for the initiative. Economic organizations and the Nicosia Turkish Municipality also lent their support to the project, which aims to benefit both communities on the island.
Turgay Deniz, President of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the necessity of opening a new door in Nicosia to facilitate trade and promote trust and cooperation between the two communities. Similarly, LTB President Mehmet Harmancı and Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Industry President Ali Kamacıoğlu echoed the need for new border gates to support economic activities and peace efforts on the island.
Overall, the visit to Haspolat and the inspection of the new border gate underscored the collective efforts and commitment towards enhancing cross-border trade and relations between the North and the South of Cyprus.
