President Tatar meets UN representative for Cyprus Stewart

President Ersin Tatar of North Cyprus recently met with the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Cyprus, Colin Stewart, to discuss the Cyprus problem. Following the hour-long meeting, Stewart stated that they had a constructive discussion with Tatar and reminded both sides of the importance of the upcoming peace process. Stewart also highlighted the relatively calm election processes in Turkey and Greece, saying that it is an important opportunity that shouldn’t be missed. Tatar, on the other hand, emphasized the importance of sovereign equality and equal international status, which he believes are essential for a peaceful resolution to the Cyprus problem. He also mentioned that issues such as the recent earthquake and the reopening of the town of Maraş were important topics discussed during the meeting. However, Tatar opposed the involvement of the European Union in discussions regarding the Cyprus problem since the Greek Cypriot side and Greece are part of the EU, which could potentially disadvantage North Cyprus. Additionally, Tatar reiterated that the formal negotiation process cannot happen without recognizing North Cyprus’ sovereignty and equal international status.
