President Tokayev Highlights AI Revolution, Big Data, and 5G at Digital Bridge Forum

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan recently spoke at the annual Digital Bridge Forum in Astana, outlining the country’s priorities for the development of artificial intelligence (AI). The forum, which gathered over 20,000 participants, solidified Kazakhstan’s position as a leading digital and fintech hub in the Eurasian space.
President Tokayev highlighted that AI is no longer science fiction but a reality with the potential to fundamentally change people’s lives, automate work processes, and generate economic value. Experts estimate that AI’s contribution to the global economy could be comparable to a quarter of global GDP. In light of this, President Tokayev emphasized the importance of creating favorable conditions for AI development.
One of the priority areas for AI development in Kazakhstan is introducing AI technologies in industries significant to the country’s economy, such as oil and gas, energy, agriculture, transport, and logistics. President Tokayev also stressed the need for a legal regulatory framework in AI, similar to what more than 120 countries have already established. This framework will attract international companies to enter the Kazakh market while ensuring the protection of personal data.
To accelerate AI development, President Tokayev tasked the government with building data centers specializing in AI and involving global players like Amazon, Google, Mastercard, and Citigroup in the process. Additionally, Kazakhstan plans to create the National AI Platform next year, which will combine data from the state and large businesses. The deadline for introducing the 5G network was also moved forward to 2025.
President Tokayev also emphasized the importance of equipping people with digital skills from an early age. He cited the Astana Hub education programs as an example and suggested launching similar programs in schools to prepare the younger generation for the opportunities presented by AI.
Furthermore, Tim Draper, an American venture capital investor, praised Kazakhstan’s IT journey, stating that many digital solutions in the country surpass those of developed economies, including the United States. Draper mentioned the success of Kaspi.kz, a fintech firm known for its technological innovation in the financial sector, as an example.
The forum also saw participation from TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, who highlighted the platform’s mission to inspire creativity and bring joy to people. He announced that TikTok has become accessible in the Kazakh language, allowing more people in Kazakhstan to express themselves and explore the world.
Overall, the Digital Bridge Forum showcased Kazakhstan’s commitment to embracing AI and digital innovation to propel economic development and create a knowledge-based economy. The country aims to establish itself as a global player in the digital and fintech space, attracting international companies and fostering domestic innovation.
