Presidential Visit Forces Closure of Half of Budapest

Traffic Changes in Budapest Due to Presidential Visit

Next Monday, traffic in the Hungarian capital will experience significant changes as a result of an official visit by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Türkiye. According to index.hu, commuters are advised to avoid the downtown area of Heroes’ Square, Andrássy Avenue, Kiskörút, Kossuth Lajos Street, Elizabeth Bridge, and the surrounding streets.

The road closures will also impact public transport and the Liszt Ferenc International Airport. Travelers should anticipate a 10-30 minute traffic restriction at the airport between 11:20 AM and 12:10 PM, coinciding with the arrival of the delegation in Budapest.

Several road closures are scheduled during the visit, including the closure of Dózsa György Street, Andrássy Avenue, and Heroes’ Square between 11:40 AM and 12:40 PM for an official reception.

In addition, there will be 10-minute-long road closures on various routes between 12:30 PM and 1:10 PM, affecting Andrássy Avenue, Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street, Deák Ferenc Square, Károly Promenade, Kossuth Lajos Street, Elizabeth Bridge, Attila Street, Palota Street, and Dísz Square. The Hunyadi János Street – Dísz Square – Palota Street route will also be blocked between 12 PM and 2 PM.

Changes will also affect travel to and from Budapest Airport. At 6 PM, the delegation will travel to the MÜPA (Budapest Palace of Arts) using a specified route which will impact traffic in the area.

Erdogan is expected to depart Budapest between 8:50 PM and 9:30 PM, leading to potential traffic restrictions on the designated route.

Public transport will also experience restrictions, with the exception of airport shuttles 100E and 200E, which will not operate to the airport during specific times.

Budapest Transport Company (BKK) advises commuters to use the underground instead of surface transport vehicles and recommends arriving at the airport earlier, especially for flights departing between 10 AM and 12 PM or 8 PM and 10 PM on Monday.

As traffic is expected to be heavily impacted, it is important for commuters and travelers to plan their journeys accordingly and stay informed about the latest updates.
