President Ersin Tatar hosts New Year’s reception for members of the press
The President of the TRNC, Ersin Tatar, and his wife Sibel Tatar hosted the annual New Year’s reception for members of the press at the Presidency.
During the reception, President Tatar expressed his satisfaction at being able to meet and interact with the members of the press, and also shared details about his recent interactions with Türkiye.
President Tatar reflected on the events of the past year, stating that 2023 will be remembered as a year filled with pain due to the earthquake that caused significant loss of life and substantial destruction in the region.
In his speech, President Tatar also highlighted the ongoing conflicts in the Israeli-Palestinian region, describing the situation as a tragedy for humanity and expressing solidarity with the Turkish Cypriot people who have faced similar challenges.
Additionally, Tatar emphasized the resilience of the Turkish Cypriot people in the face of various adversities, including the impact of the pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the aftermath of the February 6th earthquake.
President Tatar also addressed internal security concerns, stressing the need for stringent measures to counteract threats to the stability and peace of the TRNC, including issues related to the murder of Ayça Alav.
In his remarks, Tatar called for increased vigilance to prevent students from becoming involved in illicit activities upon their arrival in the country and emphasized the importance of media freedom, drawing from his own experience working in the press sector.
Turning his attention to the Cyprus issue, President Tatar underlined the resolute determination of the TRNC to uphold its sovereignty and equality, emphasizing the necessity of securing the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriots.
Tatar extended a call for the TRNC to gain greater visibility and acceptance in international media and within the Organization of Turkish States, highlighting the growing strength of the Turkish Cypriot media and advocating for a responsible and constructive role for the press in shaping public discourse.
President Tatar’s reception served as a platform for addressing critical issues, reaffirming the TRNC’s commitment to safeguarding its interests and security, and advocating for the recognition of the Turkish Cypriot people on the international stage.
