Preventing the Daily Waste of 8 Million Loaves of Bread

Turkey Takes Action to Reduce Bread Waste

In Turkey, efforts are being made to produce quality bread while also preventing waste. Kavuncu, a representative in the bread industry, stated that bread is a fundamental source of life and should not be wasted.

Over the years, various campaigns and initiatives have been implemented to tackle bread waste. Kavuncu proudly announced that 8 million loaves out of 13 million wasted bread have been saved through these efforts. This success has been achieved through collaboration with state institutions and non-governmental organizations.

The impact of bread waste is not just environmental but also economic. Kavuncu highlighted that $2.5 billion was being lost due to bread waste in Turkey. To combat this issue, a returned bread project was introduced to ensure that wasted bread does not end up in landfills or bakery warehouses. This initiative has saved approximately $5 billion for the country.

With 27 thousand bakeries operating across Turkey, bread production has become more diverse. Thanks to collaborations with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, a variety of bread types such as whole wheat, tandoori, rye, and oat bread are now being produced in the country.

As the Turkish Bread Producers Federation, Kavuncu emphasized their commitment to supporting the state and the nation. Bread is considered a blessing and the source of life, and bakers play a crucial role in providing this essential food item to citizens three times a day.

With ongoing efforts to reduce bread waste and increase the variety of bread options available, Turkey is demonstrating a strong dedication to the production and preservation of this vital food staple.
