Prime Minister Ünal Üsel Highlights Importance of Tourism for TRNC Economy
In a recent statement, Prime Minister Ünal Üsel emphasized the significant role of tourism in boosting the economy of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Speaking at the International Tourism Exchange (2025 ITB Berlin) Fair in Berlin, Germany, Üsel highlighted the challenges faced by TRNC in promoting tourism, particularly in the face of pressures from the Greek Cypriot Administration (GCR).
Despite the efforts to exclude TRNC from international tourism fairs, Üsel expressed the importance of representing TRNC at such events to showcase the country’s tourism potential. He pointed out that the TRNC government is working towards enhancing the tourism sector and attracting more visitors to the region.
Addressing the obstacles faced in transportation due to embargoes, Üsel emphasized the need to direct tourists to Ercan Airport in TRNC instead of using airports in GKRY. He highlighted the pressures from the Greek Cypriot side to discourage tourists from visiting the northern part of the island, offering incentives and discounts to divert them to the southern region.
Regarding the support from Türkiye in overcoming these challenges, Üsel mentioned discussions with Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy to collaborate with tour operators in promoting tourism to TRNC. He expressed optimism in achieving targeted tourist figures in 2025 through collaborative efforts.
In addition to promoting tourism, Üsel urged Turks living abroad, particularly in Germany, to choose TRNC as a holiday destination to support the island’s economy. He emphasized the quality of TRNC’s tourism offerings, including sun, sea, and hotels, and encouraged individuals to experience the hospitality and warm welcome in TRNC.
As the TRNC grapples with the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Üsel highlighted the importance of tourism in revitalizing the economy and supporting Turks living abroad to visit TRNC for their holidays. He reassured that the TRNC government welcomes visitors with open arms and aims to provide a memorable and enjoyable experience for all tourists.
