Problems Faced by Carob Producers Addressed at BRTK Meeting
Carob Producers Discuss Solutions to the Industry’s Challenges
Carob producers recently gathered for a meeting to address the ongoing challenges faced by the industry, including uncertainties and low prices. The meeting, which took place at the Büyükkonuk Olive Cooperative, saw Chamber of Tradesmen and Craftsmen General Coordinator Hürrem Tulga highlighting the difficulties encountered by carob producers.
Tulga emphasized that despite the start of the carob harvest, uncertainties persist, causing the products to remain on the branch. He expressed concerns over the lack of a clear policy from relevant institutions, leading to carobs being left exposed to unfavorable weather conditions, resulting in reduced product quality and financial losses.
During consultations with Turkey and the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus, Tulga noted that carob prices determined in the stock exchange were low, and the prices offered to producers were inadequate. He criticized the state for failing to address the issues faced by carob producers, stressing the need for strategic policies and incentives to provide solutions.
Bekir Bolatcan, Chairman of the Carob Producers Association, also raised concerns about certain traders exploiting producers for personal gain. Bolatcan highlighted the detrimental impact of these practices on carob producers and called for measures to rectify the situation.
The discussions at the meeting underscored the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to support carob producers and ensure the sustainability of the industry. Stakeholders are hopeful that with collaborative efforts and effective policies, the challenges facing the carob sector can be addressed, leading to a more prosperous future for all involved.
